Suffering Stems from a Belief in Separation
Reading time: Less than 1 minute
When we fall for the belief that we are an entity separate from LIFE—separate from the earth, from WhatIs-Reality-Source-Infinite Intelligence-The One-Indivisible Energy, from each other, from the body—life becomes an Other to be *controlled* versus the trusted dance of Being.
I believe all suffering, in some form or another, stems from this belief.
When LIFE (and death) is seen as other 👉 life, and death, become things to wrestle with and fear, versus accepted and flowed as one infinite now.
When EARTH is seen as other 👉🏻 earth becomes an object to be used and dominated, versus revered as one with SELF.
When G-O-D (or insert your favorite term here) is seen as other 👉🏼divine essence is fragmented into some-thing (often male) to be at the mercy of, feared, and bargained with, versus honored as one’s own being.
When fellow HUMANS are seen as other-- particularly ones who look, think or sound differently from us 👉🏾 the world appears how it often does today: divided and rife with injustice.
When BODY-MIND is seen as other (including all that comes with it, such as thoughts/emotions) 👉 body-mind becomes something to rail against, judge, and endlessly try to fix, versus the mind-blowing creative intelligence that it is.
Look and see: is there is a separation except the one the thinking mind says is there? Spend as much time investigating this as I have and eventually you may realize separation is just another illusion. A magical illusion, a necessary illusion, a useful illusion as it relates to life in temporal reality, but an illusion nonetheless.
What thought says about Reality is just more thought. How could thought, which is inherently limited, grasp what is unlimited?
What would happen if you stepped beyond the thinking mind and opened up to the intelligence that comes before all thought? If you let go of your cherished assumptions about existence? If you stopped just for a minute and allowed yourself to discover what’s always here?
Here’s what you might find: one undivided energy, one creative movement, one flow that only seems to appear as separate objects and forms. Philosophers, mystics, and masters in both the eastern and western traditions have been telling us this for ages, not to mention the quantum physicists. When will we start to listen?
“People fight for the distortion that this “I,” as an individual or as a group, is separate from all other beings. And yet that “I” is actually nothing! It is a made-up story. Yet in the belief that the story is reality, there is colossal tragedy and suffering. When this “I” that is assumed to be real and separate is examined by consciousness, it is discovered to be none other than consciousness itself.” ~ Gangaji
